Dubai International Academy has a track record of success. It was the first IB World School in the UAE to be authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to provide the complete range of IB programs. It was also the first IB curriculum school in the UAE to gain an "outstanding" rating (from the KHDA, Dubai's education regulator), which it received in 2015-16 and maintained in 2016-17 despite no inspection. Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills is a school that set a number of records when it initially started and has continued to do so in succeeding years. It was the first school to open in the Emirates Hills area, and it was also the first to be awarded IB Global School status and launch the full IB curriculum in the UAE.DIA debuted on September 10, 2005, at Emirates Hills near the Al Khail Road with over 500 students from 55 countries and an equally diversified staff of more than 50 members of 18 different nationalities. As of September 2022, the school has over 2,500 pupils representing over 80 countries, who are cared for by over 200 instructors and 40 teaching assistants. Dubai International Academy, one of the first schools to be erected in the then-new Emirates Hills neighborhood, was "thrown up" in record time utilizing pre-cast walls.
curriculum
DIA was the first school in the UAE to provide the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, beginning with the Primary Years Programme (PYP, KG 1–Year 6), progressing to the Middle Years Programme (MYP, years 7–11), and culminating in the Diploma Programme (DP, years 12–13).
Students with special educational needs (SEND) and English as a second language (ESL) are catered for across the programs, with the latter beginning in year 2. Until now, the school has believed that specialized ESL instruction is unnecessary because children "soak up" English so quickly. As part of the core curriculum, students study Arabic, French, and Spanish.
The school is also well-known for offering a variety of native-tongue programs that allow students to continue studying and developing their native language skills. Presently, the school provides two to three hours of tuition per week (in place of Islamic Studies) during school hours in Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, or Mandarin.
Facilities
As we noted in our introduction, DIA may lack some of the more defining architectural and design characteristics of many modern premium-fee schools, but its facilities are adequate. They are as follows:
A networked library
Music, music technology, art, dance, theater, and language learning specialist rooms
well-equipped science labs, computer labs, and a robotic lab.
Four climate-controlled multi-purpose halls for a variety of sports and other activities
Two covered swimming pools
a fully grassed outdoor playing field and several shaded play areas—smaller ones with play equipment and an impressively large one above the kindergarten section of the school.
shaded outdoor basketball and tennis courts.
The school offers a wide selection of after-school activities, as one would expect from an IB institution. The International Award (Duke of Edinburgh) and Model United Nations are offered by DIA as ways for students to participate in the creativity, action, and service component of the program. At the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, one of the school's pupils recently won the poetry recitation competition. The school was one of the first in Dubai to be designated as an Eco Flag school.
